I think, as with any technology, it is simply another tool. Can be used for good/bad, legal/illegal, righteous/evil ... depends on the intent of the creator wielding the tool.

Lists/Maps are good for data-transportation or a small amout of entries. With a db you can retrieve the data very fast and only the data you need at that moment.
