Since a few years I have my own (hosted) server with MySQL and PHP for a few bucks a month. Very easy and poweful (when your app doesn not grow as big as WhatsApp).
Today I created a "free" Amazon AWS account to take a look. Very powerful and not that easy to understand. I was very unsure if it's really free and at which click/point one has to pay. So after some tries I decided to close it after 2 hours.
So I will stay with my hosted server(s) which I got for a fixed price.
What about you. Anyone using Amazon AWS? What do you think?
I made the same experience with some google services. It was too hard for me to understand at what point i would have to pay and how much
So i closed it as well....
You'll have to check what type of instance you are contracting; the micro instance t2.micro is free for a year (750 hour free x month, ram, and ssd disk basics -don't remember exactly how it was).
After this year, Amazon will bill you for use as stated at t2.micro billing facts
I have a VPS contracted with 1and1 for 4.50 dollars a month, no hidden fees and quite good, 50GB ssd and 1 core (i do not know the speed) up to 10GBPS and fees for traffic.

Amazon service pricing can be pretty confusing, but I don't think it was really meant for just hosting a server to begin with. In order to meet a single server need, Amazon came out with Lightsail (https://amazonlightsail.com/). From what I can tell, the pricing from 1and1 may be better during the 1 year intro period, after that Amazon may be competitive (they do have traffic limits though).
