Hi guys I have an app published on the playstore that I have to update. Is there any way to notify the customer that he has the old version of the apk that a new version is available? Do I have to update it through automatic updates?

Yes. This is the standard way.

It is not too difficult to let your app connect to your server and check for new versions. It can then open Google Play and ask the user to update.
