Are questions on Stackoverflow losing resources?

I spend a lot of time looking through the forums here to find solutions to my problems and to learn new techniques. There is a huge depth of information in these forums that can be used without having to repeat questions.

However now that people are making questions on SO that resource is being lost. Instead of getting dialogue going around the topic there are only 1 or 2 replies and those answers are not as easy to access in order to use at a later date.

In its current format I think SO is in danger of sucking the community and the collective knowledge out of the forum.

Darn, I should have put this under "Bugs and wishlist".

I also find Stack Overflow very business like where as this Forum feels like coming home, if that makes sense.
One of the main reasons for choosing B4PPC at the time (I'm going back a few years) was because of this Forum and it's friendly, welcoming userbase, it's grown a lot since then but it still remains pretty much the same.
You would be pretty hard pressed to find a thread where a user is belittled by another.

We all have to start out somewhere and this is a great place to start :sign0089:

I would pick the forum over SO too. Plus i will need to register to post on SO..

I am sure Erel will see our concerns....

And yeah, the forums feel like "home" indeed.

I agree I prefer the b4a forum much easier to navigate and more important this is where all the great information is.I only use SO for a general programming question so I will be sticking to this forum.

Well, generally speaking I prefer the forum as well. The problem with SO is that you cannot upload any files, for instance a zip-file of your project which often is needed to get some help. At that point, you need to re-ask the question in the forum and all of sudden there are 2 threads related to your question/problem.

I believe someone just posted that the B4A-forum has now more than 15000 users and this is indeed a proof that Erel has managed to obtain many new users (well deserved). So on the other hand, if we use SO for general and quick questions, B4A will get more known to the developer-community and more users might join the band-wagon. I mean, being present on SO is an excellent way for Erel to promote B4A.

Just my thoughts...

There is no intention to replace the forum with SO. I also prefer the forum for many reasons.
SO does have some advantages in some cases. Especially for specific programming questions (though the lack of support for attachments is a problem).
Note that our search engine now includes SO questions marked with Basic4android.

Yes, the forum is a great place to be, but I can see an additional advantage to SO in that someone that doesn't know B4A may answer with a Java fix, which could occasionally lead to a simpler resolution using reflection or a library that may otherwise be overlooked.

The more I look at B4A and Android it seems that there are nearly always multiple ways to solve a problem.

It's always good to have a different perspective on things.

Its great to see such loyalty for the forum however my primary reason for posting was the potential loss of information the SO might cause rather than board vrs SO.

If there could be a way to have an SO post automatically copied here, then it would keep the question and responses in a place where everyone can find it.

Just a thought.
