Android Question Attempt to write to read only database

I have several apps that work quite happily on my Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. I have just bought a Nexus 9 - the apps will not write to or update my database on it. I get "attempt to write to read only database".
The database is in "/storage/emulated/0/". I can update the database with no problem using SqlLiteManager. Anyone got any ideas

No it's not an Sd card
Why aren't you using File.DirRootExternal? Is this a sd card?
Basically I'm doing it that way because I found it worked! I'm far from an expert! It's not an Sd card. Nexus devices don't take cards.
