Audio player dropouts

Has anyone come across the problem that the inbuilt media player component has dropouts from time to time? Especially for very short sound clips (less than 0.5 seconds in length), I experience the phenomenon that maybe 30 times the clip plays fine, and then does not play anymore, sometimes for some time, sometimes forever.

I read up on this topic and found that the Android audio player has some issues, one of which is the described behavior.

Does anyone know a work-around?
