Beginner: How to download a text file via ftp

Hi everybody
I am just beginning to discover this basic4ppc after several years of inactivity when I was playing with visual basic 3.
Can anybody give me some infos on how to download a text file via ftp?
The file is a metar wich basically stands for meteorologic report and is 2 line of text.
I need to get this file, then assign the text to a string and work from there.
I have really no basic knowledge of ftp or http but somehow I think it should'nt be too much difficult. I just can't figure out how to start.:sign0085:
