Best OS for hosting a B4J app?

Hi,

I am starting to do some research on some hosting (VPS) for my B4J app I have written. I still have some finishing touches I need to do, but thought I would look around while I have some spear time.

I have found a (VPS) host I like to use and they give me a selection of some OS to use..

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
CentOS7
Debian8
Windows 2003 R2
Windows 2008 R2
Windows 2012 R2

Or they give me the option to use my own ISO which I can use. (I was hoping to use one of the above ones though)

Which is the best OS these days to use ?

To be honest I have never used Linux (used it once for about 5 minutes, about 10 years ago).

Told by many that Linux is better than Windows when it comes to hosting, so I am hoping to use Linux but not sure what Linux version is better then the other versions so thought I would ask the question.

Windows Remote Desktop makes managing your Windows servers quite straightforward. It's basically just like managing a local Windows machine (GUI and all). If you choose a Linux server, you'll probably be doing all your tasks via SSH. This might be rather unpleasant for someone new to Linux.

This could be a good opportunity to learn Linux. Or, if you just need something familiar so that you can effectively manage a production application, Windows might be the way to go.

Can't you install something like Tynetec ?

I think I might get an old desktop PC that I am no longer using and format it and install Linux on it so I can play with it before I get the VPS hosting so I can learn Linux.

Should the VPS act as a server, for instance running a non-GUI app?
If yes, I would install a linux distribution and handle everything using SSH.
If you need a VPS with GUI, then beware that you need more RAM. You could use VNC...

It's going to act as a server and it's going to be running a non-GUI B4J app.

I can't say I have used SSH before, but did watch a few videos on YouTube and it looks fairly easy to use. Bit like the command prompt except it's doing it over the network/internet.
