Two things could be happening (the a is almost for sure the correct one):
a) You did not install in Arduino IDE the corresponding board or set of boards (f.e. Google "how can I install the board...." f.e. ESP8266 or ESP32 or your board specifically)
b) You need to install the driver for the USB to Serial chip (usually it is CH340) so Google "CH340 driver" but it could also be if I remember correctly CP...{something}
