How do I get the location of my phone without activating the GPS?

if it doesn't need to be really accurate you can base your location on the cell broadcast towers. there are some libs for it on this forum.

What do you mean inaccurate, how many feet can you go wrong?

Do you know a more precise way, perhaps through the data connection?

I've seen it detecting my spot 1.5-2km away from where I actaully was.

The library reference I gave you will attempt GPS if not available will use network to select the coordinates.
