no really.. I want to know how many people are in the shop or ideally walking on the street, walking close to the shop.. (keep a Smartphone dedicated for it)

I don't think you can do it by software only...
To count phones you have to either "see" the Bluetooth devices nearby, or, the best case scenario, count the gsm signals...
A software only based solution would be to use opencv and "count people", but you would be limited to the image surface.

thanks Cableguy..I worked with sensors to count people..but to do it on street looks hard..

when I turn on the hospot in my smartphone android it tells me when my latpot or my iphone is connected.. then I think if the people are walking with wifi on in their Smarphones..the smartphone will try to connect to my "b4x-hospot" ahh! looks simple but don't know how

Why should my device connect to your hotspot if i would walk around your shop?

It will find it, yes. But it will not to connect to it because it is not a "registered" wifi-spot my device would connect to.

yes and no..if it is a free wifi-spot will try..

This is why I didn't even mention it in my reply, even if it's a free hotspots, you have no guarantee it will try to connect

No. My device will not connect to the AP unless i tell my device to connect to this AP automatically.

My idea is, f0raster0 shd put a board at the gate of his shop mentioning below,

Free WIFI
5 MBPS Speed
25 GB free / day
No Purchase needed to connect

Well this will lure many to try to connect to the wifi and he will get the count. If anyone complains just say "the network is slow due to heavy load on it."

Anyway you get number of people tried to connect to your wifi

yes.. a way should be there..but we don't know (..yet)

1) if you want your device stop looking for wifi you have to go to advanced setting in your Smartphone and change it there, usually people don't do that, or yes?

2) No guarantee, yes like also can't be sure if people walk with wifi-on or using Smartphone or Smartphone+Tablet, but it could give us a reference..

AnaldGupta, the shop has wifi for customers, I was thinking about "something" easy to put anywhere to count people..

My questions would be:

Why use a smartphone to setup an access point ? - much easier (in my opinion) to use something like this or explore the possibilities that Google Nearby might offer here

Usually, the type of thing you are seeking to do, will be an integrated system if you want accurate results AND if you really want to go "underground", Google "Stingray" or "IMSI catcher" and "IMSI Catcher using WiFi" - Now that makes for interesting reading !!

I have done a couple tests using this example.

steps:
1) Created a Wifi-hotspot with security open (free) in my Android
2) Installed the App demo "Android wifi Hotspot Manager" (johan Schoeman)
3) IPhone in "Flight Mode" and never connected to our Wifi-hotspot before.
4) Start the Android wifi Hotspot Manager in my android
5) In my IPhone turned off Fligh Mode, then my IPhone start looking for wifi
Result:

• IPhone can't connect to our Wifi-hotspot
• IPhone show the wifis available, including our Wifi-hotspot but can't connect automatically, DonManfred was right, I need to choose the network.

6) in my Iphone I chosen our Wifi-hotspot, iphone connected ok to our Wifi-hotspot
7) IPhone to flight mode again.
8) go to 4)
Result:

• IPhone connect automatically to our Wifi-hotspot
