Dim/ tint the background with animations?

Hey Guys,
I just designed a menu system using a custom dialogue box. After researching on this forum I discovered that there's no way to close the dialogue via a button. So I decided to design my own dialogue-esque menu from scratch. I particularly like the way that the dialogue comes into the foreground: The views behind the dialogue fade out and the user can no longer manipulate them.

Does anyone know if there is a way to achieve this affect with code?

The attached project is a sample of what you want to do, there's no "dimming" animation but the panel simulates a dialog box.
