This &^%$! problem cost me several hours of frustration, so I thought I'd best share it before moving on.
The EditText view was causing havoc in my app. Pressing a key on the keypad would cause a stream of random keys to be generated. In desperation, and thinking I must be doing something silly, I stripped everything out of my program until all that remained was just the EditText (ready to upload to the forum requesting help). The problem persisted.
Then, in one of those strange leaps of intuition, I unplugged the USB connection from my computer (connected simply to keep the phone charged up). The problem went away!
Conclusion (with my phone & O/S): Debugging while plugged into a USB port can cause weird behaviour in EditText.
