Is there a way to connect to the b4a bridge instead of the emulator whilst the emulator is running? (so you don't have to stop and start it all the time)

If you have both running/connected you will be prompted to choose which one to connect to when installing new code. Or are you asking about something else?

(Because I'm not being asked anything, it just uses the emulator instead)

You won't get the choice unless you have already connected B4ABridge with Tools -> B4ABridge -> Connect.

I never get the choice.

When you compile in the background it deploys to the last chosen device. You should once compile regular (F5) and then choose the new device.
