Fireworks

We moved house a few months ago. Dogs are going nuts here at moment, because somebody nearby is putting on the most massive private fireworks show I've ever heard.

Happy New Year!

Including a few instances of massive booms followed by ominous silence ?

Now 5 minutes past midnight.. I have not got this far for a few years.. ?

Nor have we seen such a full on , continuous, mind blowing, need more words.. display of pyrotechnics.

And they are still going. ??

Selamat tahun baru. ?

Yours probably bigger than ours. Sale and possession of fireworks has been banned for the general public here since I was a teenager. Whereas before that happened, the milk bar next to my primary school did a roaring trade in explosives. and it is surprising that most of us survived to adulthood. ?

from WA... yeah we used to save up and head down to the fruit & vegi store to get ours.

We were lucky to have some vacant land next door that every one seemed to aim for with the rockets and whatnot. The next morning we'd
Go hunting for all the fizogs which would arm us up for a few days of fun. ?

I remember one year, we had all our big red crackers ( can't remember all the cool names they had) in 2 singer sewing machine drawers behind us...
lighting and throwing into the block, after maybe only 6 or so chucks the wick must have fallen out into a drawer.
We thought we had thrown a dud, as there was no bang... But then all hell broke loose with nearly all our arsenal going up at once.

It was an early night that year... ?

Last night was insane... We just plonked ourself in a couple of Beach chairs which gave us a great view of the coastline (Sanur and north)
From 6pm onwards it was just a constant show as far as the eyes could see (and 2 foot in front ?)

I thought they were clamping down a bit on fireworks here... The stall owners usually have them partially hidden.. But this trip they are everywhere
and every night over 3 weeks we are treated to numerous shows while eating. (and drinking that delicious Bintang). ?

some vacant land

I grew up on 10 acres that included 8 acres of horse paddocks out back with neighbouring similar land and a quarry. So that was the usual test firing range for me and my friends. Most times the aim was to make the biggest bang. Petrol was sometimes involved, which made more of a whoomph than a bang but also very satisfactory fireballs.

This time yesterday my son was flying back from Europe via Asia and news of a plane crash in the region would have freaked me out:

Link not working...

Seen the video of the plane landing and then the fire. Very lucky ( in one respect) passengers and crew.

Another story that freaked me .... We have flown with Air Asia a bit over the years. Maybe 20 odd years ago they lost a jet in Turbulant skies
somewhere over the straight of Malacca. The investigation result was the plane lost all power and crashed as the pilots had no training
In stall recovery ?

I would have thought all pilots of commercial jets, regardless of year would have had this training. I'm all for cutting costs...
But do it in the sandwich filling / water, not wine depatment.

the plane lost all power and crashed

If we're talking about what happens after all engines stop, then this is the classic:

closely followed by that BA 747 that lost all engines for a while thanks to a volcanic ash cloud.

an announcement to the passengers that has been described as "a masterpiece of understatement" :

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress.

?

Oh, and that bird-strike one that ended up in the Hudson. The ATC recording for that still tears me up.

We have flown with Air Asia a bit over the years.

My original strategy was "only fly Qantas". Then I needed to get to Nhulunbuy, which Qantas didn't directly cover, so I had to broaden my strategy to be "only fly on planes with a kangaroo on the tail". Later I broadened again to include airlines of English-speaking countries (since ATC is nominally done in English). Then to planes flown by pilots from English-speaking countries. Now that I don't fly much, I'll fly with anyone.

On a related note: when he was much younger, my son was booked on a KLM flight to Amsterdam. Then MH370 went missing. Turned out his plane was a Malaysian Airlines codeshare, which he was not too thrilled about. But he got there ok, and back too, flying on a Malaysian Airlines plane over Ukraine. Two days before MH17 was shot down.

To this day, whenever I ask "what could possibly go wrong?" his standard answer is "I could get shot down".

flying on a Malaysian Airlines plane over Ukraine

I was watching his flights on flightradar24.com and I remember noticing that Ukraine was pretty empty of planes and thinking that's a bit odd, maybe the Ukraine overfly fees are too high. ?

Yeah... Seen that on the Aircrash Investigation TV series.

My original strategy was "only fly Qantas"
First trip to Bali ex Port Hedland 1981.. Single flight per week, one week Qantas, next week Garuda.

Holidays dictated we were flying Garuda. (Years before they decided to do something to address there dismal safety record)
So pulling ourselves from the Night club at 3am and walking across the road to the airport we were greeted by the sight of our majestic aircraft.

It looked like it had been sprayed with sump oil and left to dry, then followed with a light hosedown of degreaser. Not a pretty sight. ?
First order was "Scotch Please".. I was given a tumbler filled to the brim with straight scotch... No ice, no filler, ?

I spent the rest of journey there and entire flight home in the cockpit... Can't do that now ?
