Hello Forum,

A slight Problem ! After my Wifes Death on 03.02.10 my MDA Pro hit a Wall.
So, now we have a HTC HD. WM 6.1

I want to use GPS4PPC with the new Device. But using a external Bluetooth Device. The Unit has the newest Chip, (SiRF III Chip) and ought to work with the HTC.
Unit: Fortuna Bluetooth GPS Slim. Batt Power Time = 8 hours.

Q. What settings are required on the device to work with GPS4PPC satellite navigation software.
1. Tap on Start > Settings > System tab and select External GPS.
2. In the Programs tab, set the GPS program port to COM4.
3. In the Hardware tab, set the GPS hardware port to (None) and the Baud rate to 4800.
4. In the Access tab, ensure Manage GPS automatically is selected.

Been working with this about all Day now, without any Results.
Would someone please Help me with this, so GPS4PPC will work on the HTC ???

Thank you VERY MUCH FOR ALL HELP !!!

Best regards.

William

3. In the Hardware tab, set the GPS hardware port to (None) and the Baud rate to 4800.
I think that this line is wrong. On my Diamond "none" would set it to use the internal GPS. You need to set it to the Bluetooth Serial port that connects to the external GPS. You might find that by Settings -> Connections -> Bluetooth -> Services and select Serial Port (check Enable Service) -> Advanced. It is one of those two ports, I am not sure which one!

EDIT :- I've just looked at my HTC Diamond and it has a totally different Bluetooth Settings to both my Axim X30 and my iPAQ214 so the above, which I checked on the iPAQ may not apply to your HTC. If so you will need to set up an outgoing Bluetooth COM port by whatever means is implemented on your device.

William,
I think that GPS4PPC works with GPS.dll, which use the hardware port of the GPS.
The HTC, if I remember correctly, will work only with the soft port. This means you need a program which use the GPSDriver.dll (this dll use the software port).

Hello Agraham, Derez, Klaus.

Your words of wisdom are noted but may I ask the following questions:

The GPS4PPC program, version 2, works with the GPSDriver.dll.
On the htc Touch HD it works fine with the internal GPS. Thank you Klaus.

But, when using the internal GPS with the HTC the Batt power is minimum.
Using my external device I get about 8 hours of Batt Power !

Q. So, where can I find a program so we are able to use the GPSDriver.dll ?

Q. Or better yet , is there not a work around to this Situation ???

Thanks in advance for your response.

Best regards.

As it works with the internal GPS with GPSDriver.dll all you should need to do is what I said in post #2. Instead of pointing the Intermediate Driver to the internal GPS (none) point it to the (probably outbound) Bluetooth COM port for the external GPS.

Agraham I have been working on a Solution for the GPS hardware port Settings.

But everytime the port is set to whatever, it just kicks the setting back out.
I installed a GPS Test App and got the Internal GPS to work with COM 1 set.

But like I said, we are unable to set the GPS hardware port.
A REG EDIT for the HTC I had also installed on the Device, I have been checking the settings there. But we do not know to much about this yet. Also I have been Googleing here and there, but there are so much crap there...

It would be very helpfull to have some contact with someone that does know the correct settings on the HTC for a external Bluetooth Device. This, would help !

Edit: on Device.
Q. In the HKEY_LOCAL_MASCHINE/System/CurrentControlSet do we maybe have to change a setting ?

Q. is it probable that the actual hardware com port is hidden on that device i.e. not directly available to GPS4PPC Software?

Other then that, I can only keep trying. Any ideas Mr. Agraham ? Help a technology handicapped guy out....

Best regards.

Hmm! Setting the GPS hardware port to the outbound Bluetooth COM port for an external GPS works fine on my iPAQ 214 so I tried doing the same on my HTC Diamond - I've never bothered trying it with an external GPS before because it has an internal GPS.

Like your Touch HD I find that the Diamond doesn't accept the setting and always reverts to "none". It looks like the Intermediate Driver is only able to use the internal GPS and not an external one

Have you tried bypassing the Intermediate Driver by setting the applications' COM port to the outbound Bluetooth COM port? I tried on the Diamond but that doesn't work either, but that might be because I wasn't sure that the Blootooth connection with the GPS was actually made.

Hello Agraham.

I have tried alot of things to get some Action using the external BT.
Dont really know what else can be done right now. I am ready to pop the HTC against the Wall also !

No Sir, I have not tried bypassing the Intermediate Driver by setting the applications' COM port to the outbound Bluetooth COM port.

Q. How would I do this ???

Thanks in advance for your response.

Best regards.

Well, I am still working on the Comm Port Problem with the HTC.
I might have found an Answer, at the xda-developers Site. There is a App for download thats called GPS Com.zip. I tryd to Register two days ago, but still have gotten no email from them. Also sent a email to the Admit, because of the Register problem.

Q. does somebody on the Basic4PPC Forum have this little Programm (GPS Com.zip ??? It is a Com port config app.
If so, would it be possible to post this on the Forum for me ? Or sent to wm.chatman@freenet.de

It just might help and we would be able to use GPS4PPC and a external Bluetooth Device.

Best regards.
