They will release developer tools in next few weeks.
If Android apps work with some minimal modifications or even better without any modification, it will be fine, otherwise they have no chance.

What are the chances of that happening? It seems they would have to disassemble google to find the hooks and achieve that (or, more unlikely: negotiate with Google to access hooks).

Even if the USA comes to its senses and a new president is in office from january, how likely is it that these restrictions as set by The Chump will be reversed? And, if they are reversed, then, have things progressed to the point where the Chinese will just continue with their plans to challenge their way into the google space? [they'll continute those plans anyway. . . . .]]

The split just seems to be there and sticky. I have just had to make the decision to shift from Huawei devices back to Korean devices which will have the google services in order to continue developing (that is on a developer device as opposed to a user device).

What is known about what the Huawei developer tools will cover - how will they even try to make a Huawei App compatible with google ecology without raiding the IP and crossing into all sorts of legal dung-piles?

That whole ecosystem would be locked to Huawei devices, in all likelihood, so unless one of us is devoted to a market for our developments in China, then, we would not have to find a way to recompile Apps for HarmonyOS - maybe Huawei will provide a tool - that is if their international market remains viable because people may just drift away from their devices - something that could turn on them quite quickly as The Chump's "strategy" bites harder.

Looks like The Chump has Made America Grate (sic) - Again

Somehow we the developers have forgotten that the base Android system is Open-source!
If it were not so, we wouldn't have so many "very low end specs" phones with it.
As I understand it, if left unchanged, Android is yours for the taking, and you are allowed to introduce changes to it. The "licences" Google provides manufacturers is for maintaining the OS compatible with that manufacturer devices and provide support and updates.
So, Harmony, can very well be a spin-off of Android, and Huawei only needs to provide support for their own devices.

I did not find any information that it is based on AOSP, unlike the first version.
Version 2.0 is build from the ground.

Some good points made. I've often thought Android is just a spin off of Linux, anyway. Once had a Linux phone (maybe before Android) it was good too.

1.4 billion Chinese will spread this new operating system enough.
??? ?

Take a look at the Android wiki page and you will find that Android is in fact open source, and is only "comercially sponsored" by Google.

I know what AOSP is and what Android is. I just say there is no info about connection between HarmonyOS v2.0 and AOSP.
Also there is no version of AOSP fork that will work on device (iOT) with 128 KB ram memory.
I highly doubt HarmonyOS 2.0 is AOSP fork.
Check open harmony project.

fact open source,
Just like B4X ?

BUT, that bit about
most devices include proprietary components such as Google Play
seems to be where the "bug" Stops. Implies that other bits are add ons and Not open-source as a result. So Play relies on Services relies on ... Blah blah....meaning third parties won't have unfettered access.

I seem to recall that recently Huawei set up its own version of Play and, I guess, therefore, it's own services AdMob and so on. {Samsung has its own App Gallery too, AAMOF. }

I wonder how Huawei plans to monetise its developer offering (assuming that us lot could/wanted to develop h-Apps) ? Google allegedly, 'copied' their model and had enough money to fend off the complaint. And would complain if Huawei copied it, particularly if users outside China are billed too. Anything inside China, well even Google could go suck lemons. It would be interesting to see what an alternative monetising model would look like.

FREE TO ALL works for me.

I thought you were talking about Android...
Anyway... nothing in that page tells me that the exact same OS version will work on different architectures.
I think they will do like micro soft did, with win10iot, wintertime, and so on

Huawei touts HarmonyOS as a mobile operating system that can work across a number of different devices. Developers only need to create one version of the app that ports across multiple pieces of hardware, the company claims.

The same as B4x at least for most of the code... but then you need to compile, or as they state "port" the app to target the device class you want.
Anyway, this discussion is getting way out of main subject.

You should do the same.... in this forum we have and RESPECT all kind of nationalities, religions, skin colors, political preferences, football (soccer for the other sice of the globe) preferences, etc, and everyone's allowed to defend them in an educated way.
@rabbitBUSH was in no way expressing a political opinion, but criticizing an economic decision made by a president that runs a country like he runs his companies. All he cares about is results, no matter the means used to achieve them.
This last sentence of mine, does not make me a Trump's hater, nor an American hater... it just means I have a good pair of eyes and ears connected to a fairly good brain and it allows me to be critic.
As I said before... this tread has derailed!

If Huawei invested $100M and gave away 10 million economy editions of a new phone with the new OS, for $5 a piece, distributing them all over the world, then
Android and iOS will be in real trouble. The company will return the $100 in a matter of a year or two.
