I find most Android Auto apps to be very limited GUI wise...

The problem with Android Auto API ist that it currently only supports messengers and audio apps.

Yes, you can develop other apps with a GUI but you won't get them in the play store. So developing Apps for Android Auto ist currently not very useful if you don't write a messenger or audio app.
