I know this isn't new, but I had not noticed it before...

What is the difference between a module (which I have been using a lot) and a code file (which I had not noticed)?

Code files were implemented before modules. It was a workaround for the 64k limit of the device IDE textbox. Since the support for modules there is no reason to use code files.
