New HP Laptop computer with Windows 10

Bought the computer and now wished I had not.
Windows 10 is far away from the User Interface to DOS that it started out with.
Now you need unlimited broadband and be willing to let others use the computer.
MS do heaps of up and downloading with reports etc. Also HP do the same. McAffee antivirus also give it a good work out.
And so it goes on.
Went to YouTube and found some you beaut videos on windows 10 which showed how to turn off a lot of this Uploading etc.
One guy in particular mentioned a prog from SpyBot which is called Beacon.
It is absolutely a great prog as it searches through the computer and shows lists of services etc which you can turn off.

Found it helped but there still was heaps of broadband usage.
Went to GlassWire and downloaded their Free app which analyses the ports and shows who is doing what. It also keeps the info so you can examine it after logging off the net.

I am an old timer and like the simple ways. So I will go to Terabyte and get the Boot Bare Metal and install a Boot Menu and a Linux OS on my new computer.

I know keep up with the times....

install classic shell and you can select to have an XP or 7 like menu instead of that mix of menu+blocky mess without the search option that got moved out of it
remove all the unneeded crap from HP (it's a lot!)
remove the McAfee trial and install Avast or something else
disable the data sending stuff
disable unneeded services (especially indexing/search if you don't use it)

10 is very speedy in boot and usage if set up right so that's not the part to complain about.

WIN10 is (much) faster than WIN7 and the f**** latency (clicking on an icon and waiting 'till somathing happens) is gone. The Desktop is the same. Starmenue has (now) a only little differences to WIN7 (at least you get used to it in some days). To be honest: I don't understand the moaning of users who have upgraded to WIN10.

@BPak : Yep. I understand the big change and I deactivated some services, too (the internet is full of "how to's") but be careful. Do not overdo. Most users then complain about how unstable it is (which is another reason to dislike Windows).

And: What do you do with your computer? Just clicking on some icons, develop some apps and browsing the net? Ok, that's the main thing. Changin the start menue or installing Linux (which is more complicated to use) is not. Just try using WIN10. It's ok

After avoiding Win8 like the plague .. I finally Upgraded all our machines last week (3 PCs / 1 laptop).
It was a pleasant experience to start with .. but after hitting a few brick walls with various issues , samba shares / serving media to various machine etc
I have just today returned this / my main PC back to Win7. (I will still tinker on the spare PC)

As much as I wanted to adopt Win10 .. and know that eventually I will, I found myself a little disappointed with the final product.
While there were improvements in speed .. everything seemed so much samo samo with a new candy overlay & settings interface ..
which I found myself bypassing more and more for the old Control Panel.

I have always had a strict regime of what runs on this PC .. both for housekeeping and speed purposes..
So @BPak .. I fully agree with @sorex about scrapping the mountain of Bloat that comes a running with a new machine.

It will take me awhile to get this PC back to its previous state .. But in the process its a opportunity to change some old / lazy habits.

But I'm not chucking out Fences !

It is the amount of broadband used and having little control over the use of he computer that is annoying me.
I have a prog from IOBit iobit-unistaller which has paid and free version which is excellent for cleaning up 10.
Thanks everyone for all the input on your experience with w 10 .

Nope. None .

But I can't say I've tried very much – no more than a few times in the last 10 years.

I remember being at a friends house years ago, searching for file. All he had was Windows. I searched for half an hour, could not find the file, I knew it existed, downloaded and installed Agent Ransack, found the file within a minute or two.

use a filemanager like Total Commander, it speeds up everything compared to the traditional windows methods and best of all not linked to annoying changes MS is doing

worst case use

dir \"partofmyfile*.*" /s

which is still faster than the GUI one (unless you use that slow down indexing stuff)

One thing I don't like about Win10 is the recent files list. I don't want someone sitting beside me or in front of a projector to see all my recently opened files.

Win10 drains my laptop battery very fast and heats up my Intel i7 laptop that really annoy me. You may found many users on the internet facing high CPU and RAM after upgrading to Win10. I just revert to Win7 last week.

as said in first post above you should('ve) check(ed) out Classic Shell which is a start button replacement where you can select XP/7 style start menu
and cofigure it to your needs if needed like disabling recently used apps in the menu and a lof of other things and it also brings back the search inthere which was removed on 10 by default and moved to another icon.

I install it on windows servers aswell because, believe it or not, that menu system is even worse than 8/10 and also blocky startscreen based and I can't find anything back that way

Initially I liked the live tiles on win10 start menu for the likes of News, Weather, Flipboard etc until I was try to find an App (sorry @LucaMs)
The tiles were so damn distracting I had to turn them all off .
The same reason I have Element Hider for web pages allowing me to read them in comfort without all the flashing video feeds.
