ODBC from the device

After asking the question about mEnable I got thinking that maybe there is another way to access desktop databases from a pocketpc/ce device.

I need to access an ODBC (Sybase SQL Anywhere) database on a desktop machine from an basic4ppc application running on a pocket pc device.

What would be my best option?

I think that using a web service is your only option.
