Parent property ?

Hi
I use the trick, used for running applications on QVGA and VGA devices alike, on applications that I want to run on the desktop with the same code as on the device, but on larger screen.

How can I differentiate between controls that are placed on forms and controls which have parents ? (the ones on the form should move according to the VGA multiplier, those that have parens are to be resized but not moved because the parent control is moved).

I looked at the text of my program by notebook and saw this line, for example:
addtextbox(infopanel,uptown,0,0,75,22,"",255,255,255,0,0,0,True,True,False,9)@...

but I don't have any property of the text box to check the difference.
Any idea ?

You could try this first. I don't know if it will automatically do what you want but it's a way to get a form to redraw itself from its design size (96 dpi = QVGA) to whatever the dpi of the screen it is being drawn on. Demo attached.

Without understanding how it works I changed the setvalue to 48 on both lines and got twice the original size, but the background of my desktop got into the frame and many other unwanted effects accompanied, so I'll stick to the simple way of multiplying...

It was just a thought. It is really meant for using to display an optimised compiled QVGA (96dpi) layout on a VGA (192dpi) device without either using forced QVGA compilation or having to programmatically alter all the controls. It seems to work quite well there where the original layout is done at 96dpi in the IDE. By changing those 96s to 48s you are saying that the original layout was done at 48dpi, and as it wasn't I guess that is why the anomalies occur.

Controlname.Parent returns the controls, parent name..
So use it in a test and do the apropiate thing you need done...

Hi derez,

You must multiply the parameters of all controls by the scale factor.
The Left and Top paramenters of a control are always referenced to the upper left corner of it's parent control independant if the parent control is a form or any other control.
Otherwise, for example, if you had several controls on a Panel and you didn't multyply the Left and Top parameters your controls wouldn't be at the right places.

@Paulo, the Parent property is not a standard property in B4PPC you will need the Door libray to get it.

All controls have parents, even Forms. What the parent property returns is actually a handle (pointer) to the parent in memory, not the name of the parent so you can't directly use it in Basic4ppc.

I'm not entirely clear what you need, something like adjust the controls on a Form but not on a Panel? If so have you tried

names() = GetControls("Panel1")

You can then use the Control keyword

Control(names(index)).Property = TwiddleWith(Control(names(index)).Property)

I am looking for a property to tell me which control is located on a panel, and which is not (= is on a form), because I had to adjust the position, using ChangeToVGA by multiplying but also by addition of a constant. I changed a device application to run on the desktop with screen positioned landscape, and showing the contents of two forms together (as if they are side by side). so I multiplied by 2 and moved the (right form) elements.left by +480, which is OK for those that belong to the form, but not for those which belong to panels.
I want to add the 480 only to controls which are children of the form.

With your idea it can be done -
After multiplying all the controls dimensions I'll have to collect all the controls that are located on panels and multiply their anchors, while for the rest of the controls i'll multiply and add. It seams a lot of trouble to check for each control if it is in the names list. A property to tell if its parent is a panel will discriminate immediately.

I seem to be missing something here Why doesn't GetControls("Form1") do what you want?
