how to encrypt the text entered by the user in "SHAH1" format so that it could be compared with the one stored on the database.

Agraham's encryption library will do what you need. Take a look at the the messageDigest object. SHA-1 is not encryption by the way it just a hash function that has a very high probability of producing a unique value.
