when will the remote compiler be able to create apps that look
normal (good) on iphone 10?

Two weeks ago.

The hosted builders run Xcode 9 and apps should show in full screen on iPhone X.

i get the page shown below. it is too small for the iphone x's screen.
what am i missing here?

Are you using anchors in your layout? Add a view anchored to the bottom and test it.
