Has anyone tried publishing an app that allows the user to donate to you using Venmo or something similar?

I wonder if this would be easier than implementing try before you buy using Google billing.

Not sure but I think that is against the Google Play rules to make payments for apps outside Google Play.

You can use alternative billing in the app. Check If Venmo has an API to this.
In the Console you will see the option to the Google Play Billing and alternatives billings.
I don't know if it is allowed for donations.
