Are Java Libraries required to be wrapped for B4A?

If so why? is it due to size?

You should check the library development tutorial. Basic4android expects all kinds of annotations that must be included in the library source code. If you have the source code then in some cases you can modify it and use it without a wrapper (though thin wrappers do not have any negative effects).
