Slow avatars after Xenforo update?

I get the feeling that the user avatars take a split second longer to load after the Xenforo update. Meaning I see the CSS version briefly before the images load.

Is this my imagination, or have something changed, perhaps with a CDN or something like that?

I see it too. I think that the image loading is deferred to make the page appear faster.
