Specifying extension for new file name

When using SaveDialog (on device or PC) to choose a new file I sometimes click on an existing file name and then edit the file extension to a different one.

On the device I am given too much "assistance" in that the original file extension is added onto the file name after the one that I have typed, making a nonsense of the file name that I meant to use.

Is there a way of turning off this "assistance", or do I have to trap it in code and remove the spurious extra extension?
