Thinking ahead to push messages

Can anyone tell me what happens with a PUSH message.

Eventually when I create my apps, I plan to send periodic PUSH messages to the device.

My immediate question; will the PUSH messages be a text (SMS) message or are they delivered some other way?

What is the procedure?

Have a look at the C2DM tutorial. There are other ways of doing PUSH as well.
The basic idea is to have a persistent idle connection (just kept alive) to a server that pushes data through a network connection to the device.
