Can someone explain exactly what a toast message is and it's possible usages?

A toast message can be used as a short warning, alert, info, etc; that's pretty much it.

I find them helpful for debugging. Sometimes you find things happening that you didn't expect.

I too use them mostly for debugging, to check that the variables are correct. Also they replace messagebox confirmations such as " Data Saved" etc

In most cases Log messages are more useful for debugging.

Confirmation messages to the user for me or info messages.
