Hi,

We want to overlay realtime sensor data in a VR view app. Has anyone done anything with Cardboard and VR View.

The idea is that you can take a look at for example a tree with VR and see if it needs water (realtime sensor).

This is just a sample but plugging realtime sensor data into a VR view makes a lot of sense. Yes I know we will have Hololense etc. but we want something simple.

Cheers.

VR is virtual reality or voice recognition or virtual router ...

As said, Virtual reality. Everyone is diving into this right now and Google has features to add VR Views to an app.

Take a look at this:

https://vr.google.com/cardboard/

as is stands many development IDE's are starting to support VR (Adobe AIR, AGK, Unity, Android Studio, etc) the Cardboard SDK has been out for a while, I only wish I had time to learn how to wrap it for B4A use.

Even Face book has now included support for Surround (360 Degree) pictures to be viewed in your news feed and can viewed in a VR Headset.

I can take 360 degree images with my Samsung S7 (by downloading the Surround Mode option) and it’s really good.

It would be a shame if B4A got left behind with this amazing technology, but there really doesn’t appear to be anyone working on this, I have tried playing video in two views simultaneously with some success as a 2D player in a 3D headset (the views are always in front) but it’s not what I would call a commercial option...

If anyone else is actually working on this and has some success at implementing VR in any way I would love to hear about it.

I've said this before, I've played around with VR, even wrote a very simple viewer lib which is posted here in the forums, that been said, VR is nothing but a fad, it comes and goes, I have several "cardboard" viewers even some nice ones which I used for 10 minutes and then put them in the junk drawer with the rest of my gadgets and gizmos, to call VR "revolutionary" or "booming" or anything like that is really a stretch, just like years ago the famous 3D TV which was supposed to REPLACE regular TV, remember that? yeah, sure... exactly .

I think I must agree with what @NJDude said. I had high hopes for 3D TV (I really enjoyed watching Avatar in 3D on my 3D TV) but at the end the consumer interest for it faded away. I think this will happen with VR too - now there is a lot of hype but, unfortunately, I think it will end up as 3D TV...

My comments don’t just include VR but 360 images, now that it’s part of face book it won’t be long before every housing estate agent (real estate agent) wants this technology on their web sites and want badged apps to view houses...

And tour operators/travel agents on their sites for tours of holiday destinations... Billion pound industries all wanting to show their wares to the buyer in the best way possible... They have started this already, i have several Travel agents on my books that are asking now...

Fad or not even the NHS are investing a considerable amount of money into the immersive sensory application of the device.

ASMR is just one example with over 4000 recorded videos designed to help calm, de-stress and promote wellbeing for those who need and can use this type of technology, and its proving to work... A reduction in medication for patients proves there is a place for this type of technology.

As it stands the NHS currently pay £££££ in designing and developing sensory rooms and VR/AR will become part of those rooms.

So the fact that those patients can go home and do the exact same for very little money will go some way to keeping this tech out of the bottom drawer or at least used more often than some fads...

I have never been asked about 3D TV because its too far out of reach even in the sensory rooms but VR for pennies is not out of reach!
