i am not that old (only 40) but I have a weakness for old tech. i grew up with a c64 with a cassette tape. when i was loading a game like Rambo i went making myself a sandwich and maybe take a shower and still, the game was loading. ?
i have some retro computers at home like atari, c64. and i play them sometimes. it brings back good old memories.
it also inspires me in my work.
we had much more patient then.
today if the ATM is taking more than 5 seconds to push you the money notes you start knocking on it thinking something is wrong.
at least, the fact thinking knocking on an electric device will repair it still remains. ?
If I remember correctly - I can't remember when or who - someone discovered that the key to animating a sprite was to XOR the bits - then render the sprite in the next location. That way the last image reverted to background and the new one with a movement - the next panel in animation as it were - popped. without that Industrial Light and Magic might not have existed.
Something like that. You have to think of how Walt Disney did cartoons manually to visualise.
Legend has it that someone at my old university worked the algorithm to render flowing hair, grass being blown in the wind - etc. As I said it's our urban Legend.
Check this video (you have to log in) of the game's creator. He recorded his brother to get the movements. There's a link to an ebook of how it was made.
