Android Question Accessing files on phone

Is there a way of accessing existing media files - for example music - that are already on the phone? It's a standard phone with no extra memory.

I've tried everything I can find, but without success. I'm coming to the conclusion that the answer is no and that I'm restricted to DirAssets and what is included with my program.
