Is there an accepted way of delivering other files with an application?

I have several sets of gifs and jpeg images, which I want to put in a directory on the SD Card. I could include them in the .apk and copy them the first time the app runs, but I don't really want to bulk up the file size too much.

Any suggestions?

Is it artwork for the app, or something more dynamic to be displayed inside the app?

If it's artwork for the app, it really should ship with the APK.

No, it's not Artwork.

The files are alternate images and background, to allow the user to change the appearance of the game.
