How to Run Non Basic4Android Apps in the Android Emulator?

How do I go about installing a third party application into the emulator? Is this even possible?

I am looking to run some apps to just get a visual sense of them to be inspired in developing my own applications. Looking at many of the apps screenshots alone do not provide the feel for any given app.

You can use 'adb' to install apk files to the emulator.
Something like:
adb -e install file.apk

I must say that the experience from working with the emulator is far worse than with a real device.
