Being able to send IR signals to home appliances like TV, Air Conditioner can be very useful in implementation of home control devices, or home security.
Imagine the following scenario:
You are not at home. A burglar enters your home. You get an alarm from the home security system that you had installed and immediately turn on the TV by IR signal.
The burglar sees the TV, sits down and soon is asleep...
The police arrives and all in place with the burglar still sleeping. End.
