Layout Variants

Am I right in assuming that the display output is limited by the layout variants you add in Designer?

For example, you start with 320 x 480 only. If you leave that as the only layout would it force the app to be in portrait and ignore trying to rotate the view?

Also, if you don't add 480 x 800 will it display only in small form on a tablet?

No, the system will adapt the layout that fits best the current screen resolution. If you set a layout for 340/480 (density 1) it will display correctly in 240/320 (density 0.75) or in 480/640 (density 1.5).

For example, you start with 320 x 480 only. If you leave that as the only layout would it force the app to be in portrait and ignore trying to rotate the view?
No, if you want to limit the display mode to portrait only you need to set it in the IDE. Menu Project/Orientations supported/Portrait.

Also, if you don't add 480 x 800 will it display only in small form on a tablet?
It will display OK in that resolution. The only difference is that the 'standard' display would be 480 x 640 (density 1.5) so with a 480 x 800 (density 1.5) pixel screen you have an extra space that you must manage yourself.

But, if your tablet has a 480 x 800 screen with a density of 1 this means that the phyiscal size of the screen is bigger than the 'standard' devices.
In this case you should set a layout with this resolution.

Best regards.
