Looks like a real Compass is my best solution now.

Orientation sensors do also not work? This is really strange. Never seen that. As far as I know, they should on a Redmi9. If it is a new phone, give it back to the dealer. It's not working correctly, you prooved that now. So this is also the reason you can't download a compass app from Google. No working sensors (or no sensors) no need to install the app on your phone, Google rejects your request.

Yes it is strange, as I still remember I have used Compass on this phone.
The phone is brand new but one and half years old. I may or may not get free service, if I take it to service center for it.
But I need to find out first if something can happen like this to a phone that a sensor stops working ?
The phone never fell to ground that it may have affected it.

Can you figure out the actual model name? You know, the one you get by checking Phone.model, or something like that?

I know that I always had some kind of strange problems afterwards. But maybe it's a good idea to reset your mobile phone to factory settings. Maybe something got "misconfigured" during the last update.
At least it won't cost you money again. Of course, try to make a backup first. A RedMi9 should actually be able to do this.
I don't know how the phone is constructed internally. It's possible that a single chip is responsible for the entire sensor system and that's the one that's defective. Is it possible that the update you mentioned was not suitable for your mobile phone and that something went wrong?

If a phone has working accelerometers, then orientation sensors are redundant (other than that they'd use less power).

But I am curious about the X=0 reading. For purpose of determining the orientations that matter, I think maybe the manufacturer is correct that just the two accelerometers Y and Z are sufficient. Although... how can it work out which direction is up in landscape mode?

@AnandGupta what happens if you start with the phone in portrait mode, then rotate it 90 degrees left to landscape, then 180 degrees right to "upside-down" landscape?

I have used Compass on this phone.

You might have got that from a GPS app: if you are moving, then GPS can measure bearing and speed.

Speed measured via Doppler effect is way more accurate than speed measured by difference of position. I suspect that bearing might be same.

Lol if my school science teacher was on this forum then he would be yelling at me to call it velocity rather than speed and bearing.

It is often a question of definition with such terms. This also applies also to the term bearing. Is it absolute or relative and what does it refer to? And then someone always knows better. It doesn't matter at all to argue about such things. And after all, your teacher is not in the forum here either.

@ANAND: Does GPS work with your RedMi9? Apart from the fact that maybe the position sensors don't work, my programme "Compass Ultimate" should at least work via GPS. Of course, then you have to move in some way. That's why there are two modes: (HIKING mode and CAR mode). HIKING mode uses the position sensors of the mobile phone to a much greater extent. CAR mode, on the other hand, is intended for upright operation of the mobile phone when it is attached to the dashboard or windscreen of the car. In this case, many mobile phones find it very difficult to recognise the direction via the sensors. GPS is then much more accurate.

But that doesn't really help you. You don't need a GPS compass, you just want to have a compass on your mobile phone that shows you the direction reasonably reliably. But you could test something else with my programme: Assume you are in HIKING mode and the mobile phone is lying flat on the table. Use a very weak magnet (scissors or a knife). The magnetic sensor system (if present and functional) should somehow respond, independent of GPS and the blue arrow should respond in some way when you pass this weak magnet around the mobile phone. This way you can also test the magnetic sensors and not only the position sensors. I can understand very well that the problem drives you crazy and is very annoying.

That is the last option I have, but presently so many information and apps are there which I use daily that I can not take this step. I do not have time to set all back again.

If I have 'lock rotation off' then the screen rotates from portrait to landscape perfectly.

Yes. This is the simple thing I need. Just a plain compass needle pointing to the North.

See why I need it. When I am at a location new to me and I have to go to home/office from there, I book car which show the car on a map. The map shows at North on top always. But I do not know which side is North from where I am standing, so to guess from which direction the car is coming ?
I have missed the car sometimes as I was looking at left but car was coming from right on other side of the road.

Another time I come up from underground station to a new place and can see the client office on the google map, but do not know if North is in front of me or back or left/right.

Just a pointing North needle can save me lots of lost time.

Understand you more and more. Well there are only limited options now. Buying a new phone, using an older one as a compass and live with the risctrictions of your actual mobile phone (which would be very annoying, to know that this piece of technology simply not is doing what it is built for). I an also understand, that resetting your phone is the last thing you would do. Have the same concerns about that.

Enter that on this site: four matches. Do they describe your sensors correctly?

This one is mine phone. It shows GPS etc. Though no compass word is there.

I installed one from Similar apps, which did install Okay, but gave below message

So I see suddenly my phone do not have Compass now !! How ??
If your phone used to have a compass sensor & now reports it's not there, the sensor might have failed. I had the same issue with the proximity sensor on my Nokia 6.2 - worked fine for about the first 6 months, then stopped working. Try downloading a sensor test app from Play Store & see what that tells you...

the screen rotates from portrait to landscape perfectly.

I am intrigued as to how they determine which way is up in landscape mode, without an X-axis reading. Perhaps they use the Z-axis reading and rely on the phone probably facing slightly upwards (towards your eyes) rather than downwards.

I am still intrigued that your X-axis accelerometer reading showed as exactly 0.
(but not enough to worry about pursuing it further ?)

Below is the result.
