If there is no bitmap associated with a panel, such as a panel's background bitmap, is memory allocation affected by the size of the panel?

Also, in the designer, you can make one panel the child of another panel. How is this done in code, if not using the designer?

No. Note however that if you call Canvas.Initialize(YourPanel) then a bitmap is created for the panel.

Also, in the designer, you can make one panel the child of another panel. How is this done in code, if not using the designer?
You can add any view to a panel by calling Panel.AddView.
