Android Question text to " " blank character?

I am doing the sample SecondProgram in the beginners guide.
Problem in page 40, is that typing " " or "" in the text box seem to not work. the emulator shows " " and is not blank as shown in the pictures displayed.

The program does not work so I assume the line of code in the designer first needs to be corrected .
