Android emulator is extremely slow. It takes me about 2 minutes to get past the Android label to the home screen and I have a decent speed system. Once it reaches the home screen, it runs much better, but still slow compared to an actual device.

How long have you waited for the home screen? I'd suggest launching the emulator, then find some other task to do for a while. Grab lunch or brew a cup of coffee. Come back in about 10-15 minutes to see if it is running. If not, I'd say your system is much too slow to make the emulator practical. If it is running, try out a few apps, like the calculator or something to see if it will run smoothly enough for testing on.

Best advice, use an actual android device.

You didn't say what you selected to emulate. Check the thread at
http://www.b4x.com/android/forum/threads/intel-atom-x86-emulator-available.18147/
also, have a look at
http://www.androidcentral.com/intel-releases-x86-system-image-android-emulator
Maybe that would help.
The other choice might be something like the the YouWave (http://youwave.com/) or Genymotion (http://www.genymotion.com/) emulators although I don't know if these run with the atom processor (maybe somebody here knows).
