Android Question Transparency

If you make a panel transparent, is it possible to have some of the views on it opaque?
Buttons for example.

Panels are brilliant for placing views in the right place but if you place a picture behind then they can block this out a bit.

Oh, sorry, answered my own question by experimentation, even if you take the alpha level of the panel right down to zero the views stay opaque.
