Android Question widget button text help

Hi, am learning to make a widget and am having trouble with the button text.
Using the tutorial here as an example.
I've searched the forum but didn't find anything.

In designer:

On device:

I guess the problems I'm having are:
The left button is lowercase in designer and shows up as uppercase.
The left & right buttons are both set as vert align = top, but seem more lower.
The middle button is material icon and doesn't show anything. I've adjusted font size from 14 to 30 thinking that it was maybe too small.
Not sure if they allow material icons?

Between trying different things I've tried uninstalling the app, removing the widget, cleaning the project, etc.

Not all features are supported with home screen widgets.

The IDE generates an XML file with the layout. You can see it under Objects\res\Layouts. You can further extend this XML by editing it. Make sure to set the file to be read-only or the compiler will delete it.
