If you already have a layout page called, say, "main" and you create another page and enter 'main' as the name to save it under you will be prompted that this name already exists and are you sure?
If you click NO and don't save this (which would replace the original 'main') and then go again to File and click the SAVE button it will overwrite the original 'main' with the new, and as yet unsaved, layout page.
It seems to remember you once attempted to save the new page as an already existing file (even though you aborted this save). It seems to continue to use this name even though you aborted the previous save operation. So when you click the SAVE button it doesn't ask for a layout page name again, but erroneously overwrites the original file, as though it was your previous choice.
And this is how I lost a whole lot of work.
