How long you get your payment?

One idea could be to create a simple web platform, managed by ourselves (the community). This platform would be responsible for:

Post a request: Someone who needs help posts what they need and the price they are willing to pay.

Accept the request: A developer agrees to help.

Pay in advance: The one who asks for help pays the agreed price to the platform (not directly to the developer).

Work Delivery:The developer helps and delivers the work.

Payment to the developer: The platform releases the payment to the developer, only when the user confirms that everything is fine.

Benefits:

Security for developers: We charge insurance! No more broken promises.

More trust: The platform ensures that everyone keeps their end of the deal.

More collaboration: Developers will be more willing to help knowing they will get paid.

More professional: It helps us treat these exchanges more seriously.

How Do We Maintain the Platform?

We can maintain it with voluntary donations from users who use it and who want to help it continue working.

In summary:

We need a system that protects those who offer their help. This simple platform would be a fair and practical solution.
Very good idea... I had almost the same idea combined with some open source code.

We can think about it.. you should open a new thread to organize it by members want to involved... add link here

I have 2 pending payments.
One has been pending since early September where I am kind to agree to the amount of $40 for the job. I really don't think I need to beg for so many times.
Clearly the guy is an asshole. If you ask someone to do something for you & agree on a price & the person you asked completes the job, then the decent thing to do is pay them. At least now everybody knows who he is so knows to avoid doing anything for him.

Here is a reply on Nov 29 2024.

Hi Aeric,
I was away in the Democratic Republic of Congo - it is worse than the wild west.
There is constant conflict between rebels and government forces - a very dangerous part of the world.
I was there with a group of students from the copper mines and we were not allowed to leave as the Wagner Group of mercenaries wanted us to pay a "tax" to them in order to leave.
Finally the South African Government stepped in and flew us out by helicopter to Tanzania, then a flight home.
Safe at last.
Best Regards

So what was the point of his message? I didn't see anything resembling an apology for not paying you or an acknowledgement that he needs to pay you, or even an undertaking to get you paid now that he's safely at home.

Hi Declan,

Glad to hear you are safe. I am not sure my previous message was clear to you.

Once I want to remind you for the payment you have promised.

Regards,
aeric

I know how that he is trying the "best" to help them all here...

XMAS coming and we can't wait Santa helping him... there is only one way for me...

Happens to me once, most i am owed is around $300.00, funny enough it was a recurrent customer for about 2 years, simply evaporated, sometimes i wait and wait, and keep waiting, eventually the customer reappears and pays. other times, they tell me that in about a month they will pay, always make them say the date, so you can be at their doorstep that day.

Very important to have your tools pre-made, for example with Star-dust suggestion, keep already a small module that you can insert in your code and make it boom! until paid

Don't be too inquisitive, its bad for your health.

Sometimes... the problem is when "giving" pure code... this code can't "just" expire... and "boom"

I think that this the biggest problem of all professionals (not only for developers, but for anyone sells services or products).. the best way is payment in advance (sometimes the 100%)...

I am professional from 1998... and as you already know -> I am not rich... only few knows my company and ofcourse is not at Wall Street... so you can understand how many jobs done and if they are paid... and how much time spent... to chase for my money :-(

Make a multiplication by x10 in years 2007~2013 (crisis) ---> also forgot to mention Greek New Crisis: 2015~2017, and then the lockdowns...

I need to convert the source code of a VB.NET 2010 application to B4A. Who can help me with this? I am a scientist in Vietnam, although I don't have much money, but i will pay 50$ immediately. Thank you very much!

This was a tooo loooong thread to read... I read about 80% of if and I agree 100%.
I can speak from experience, with stardust, to which I had started negotiating a job (to be done by him, therefore, paid by me), But to which I "disapeared" before concluding negotiation... Anyway, I didn't (I hope) waist much of his time with me...

Some Ideas brought here were interesting... "we" (Not me of course, it's way too advanced for me) could create some kind of Market Place with ticketing, AND "customer" & "Developer" Ratings... so dev would be advised about a low rating customer and take a job knowing the risk, and Vice-Versa..

Market Place with ticketing
I take it people are talking about creating something like this :

Upwork Platform

A friend has another platform - but she is away out of country now - so i can't get that link from her.

somewhere on the Upwork pages is advice on how to your contract working and strategies to try and ensure you get paid (either with milestones or fixed contract broken into parts). Too at night now to look for it - you'll have to scout around yourselves.
